Lynne, this is very intriguing. It sounds as though you had your students describe the work that they were doing in class. Not having the full picture, I am intrigued by what your students (and you!) could learn through the simple task of attempting to explain what they did in class. The students would have to take a shot at wrapping some words around what they did, which would have to combat the "sleep walking" modality that we sometimes get into. It could be very interesting for you hear to hear what they say they did (or what *they* say they learned) Interesting...and good for you for experimenting, Lynne.
